Using Augmented Reality (AR) HoloLive with HoloLens 2 in the classroom with VDC Coordinator Patrick

In this video, instructor Patrick Ramirez a VDC Coordinator for Arizona Pipe Trades Apprenticeship under Local Union 469 describes how his team has utilized VisualLive’s Augmented Reality (AR) HoloLive application to train students both in the classroom and on the jobsite.

He and his students use both the VisualLive HoloLive which utilizes the Microsoft HoloLens 2 headset and MobiLive which runs on both iOS iPad and Android devices.

We have been using VisualLive’s HoloLive™ for approximately two and a half years. We’ve incorporated it at the UA level (UA Local 469 Plumbers, Pipefitters, & HVAC Techs). Mike Zivanovic at the Local 597 in Chicago, Illinois introduced us to VisualLive’s software through an AutoDesk University conference. We started practicing with it and shortly after we began adopting it throughout the country with different Local Unions began experiencing it in different ways.

Here at Local 469 about a year ago we began utilizing the tool to see what we can do with it to provide a different experience in training.

If you’re doing anything with verification and cost before it gets to fabrication, it is a benefit to be able to carry something that weighs less than 10lbs to the jobsite and confirm what you designed will fit. It allows you to utilize the function to see if there’s going to be clashes before you get there. Further, you can capture and record the issues through the application and send updates to people and groups if necessary, alerting them of issues before they become potential scheduling impacts.

VisualLive provides the opportunity for students to see what they’ve drawn, built and constructed in a 3D environment in a real-life application before any costs have been put into the actual fabrication.

In one of our classrooms, students use the HoloLive application to take what they’ve drawn by hand and their instructor moves their data into a 3D environment and then push it out to VisualLive’s HoloLens.

Then they can take their designs into the cleaning room and can visualize where the point of connections are and verify if they’ve drawn it accurately. This gives the students the ability of QC their own work before they give their final submission to the instructor for grading.

Technology in Learning

Students are going to be more welcoming to the visualization of the app. It’s a generational gap. If we teach them to the apprenticeship and they’re more comfortable with new technology, they will adopt if faster.

Then when they get to the jobsite, they will become the bridge between those not as versed in new technology and help bring people up-to-speed easier because now they have that peer-to-peer rather than educator to student.

Some of the tools associated with colorizing status will give the students the opportunity to QC their work and then submit it to their instructor for verification of accuracy and receive their final grade.

There are numerous different tools inside the application but it’s primarily the visualization that provides a crisp and clean image. It’s being utilized rather heavily in our industry here in Arizona. One of our larger jobs is using it quite a bit to do on-site validation and verification.
